The first objective of Engines PdM is to develop a commercial predictive maintenance tool for diesel engines that serve critical applications. In such applications the alternative cost of engine failure (loss of life, loss of output, loss of critical time) is considerably higher than the direct cost of engine repair. Engines for which a diagnostic tool of this nature are particularly relevant include:
- Marine diesel engines
- Electrical generators
- Crane engines
- Diesel engines in process industries
- Diesel engines in the mining, oil and gas exploration industries
- Heavy diesel engines in the construction industry
- Battle tank and other heavy military vehicles engines
- Diesel engines of vehicles involved in the transportation of people and critical loads in areas lacking maintenance infrastructure
